    本次高峰论坛将邀请来自北美和亚洲各国和地区的知名专家学者,就当今肝脏病学领域的热点问题作专题报告。会议聚焦脂肪肝和酒精性肝病,全方位展现脂肪肝及其相关疾病研究的最新成就和发展趋势。大会的成功召开必将极大地推动中国和北美地区的学术交流和合作,提高本地区脂肪性肝病的诊断与治疗水平。

 

本次会议拟将成立“病毒性肝炎合并脂肪肝工作组”,探讨中国和北美地区病毒性肝炎合并脂肪肝的异同,并就其诊疗方案的制定广泛听取意见。我们深信,您的积极参与将是大会成功的有力支持。

Dear Colleagues,

 

We are honored to invite you to attend the Shanghai International Forum on Digestive Diseases to be held on September 16 to 19, 2010 in Hangzhou and Shanghai, China. The meeting is sponsored and organized by the Xinhua Hospital, Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China, The Cleveland Clinic Center for International Medical Education, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, and Canadian Liver Foundation and undertaken by Hangzhou Sixth People’s Hospital, Zhejiang Province, China.

 

A panel of distinguished faculty from the North American and Asia regions, will present at this meeting. The main focus of the meeting is fatty liver and alcoholic liver diseases. The meeting will facilitate and strengthen collaboration in education and research between academic institutions across the Pacific and will help advance diagnosis and treatment of the liver diseases in China.

 

Among the meeting agenda, we plan to establish a Working Group on Concomitant Viral Hepatitis and Fatty Liver, exploring concordance and disparity in research and clinical practice in the area between the two Continents. Your participation in the meeting is highly appreciated. 

 

The Meeting will take place during the long-anticipated Shanghai Expo from May to October, 2010. More than 240 countries and regions will participate in the extravaganza. It will be a precious opportunity for you to share the latest technology achievement and culture essence all over the world.

Biography of Invited International Speakers

       Arthur McCullough, MD, Professor of Medicine and former Chairman of Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and is a staff physician at the Cleveland Clinic.  He attended medical school at SUNY Health Science Center at University Hospital of Syracuse, N.Y. He completed his internship and residency at Cleveland Clinic and a fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He is Chair of the NIH-funded Clinical Research Network on Fatty Liver Disease (federal funding) and Past-President of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD).

        

      William D. Carey, MD, MACG, Professor of Medicine at Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and he is a senior staff hepatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, where he has practiced since his GI/Hepatology training at the Mayo Clinic. He founded the Hepatology Section and the Hepatology Training Program, and was a co-founder of the Liver Transplant Program at the Cleveland Clinic. He is well known nationally and internationally. He served as President of the American College of Gastroenterology, and on many influential committees in all US GI and liver societies. He was an author of the practice guideline on portal hypertension developed jointly by the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Association of Liver Disease. He is the Director of the Center for Continuing Education at the Cleveland Clinic. The Center’s website (clevelandclinicmeded.com) contains many educational programs available without charge on hundreds of topics, including many related to liver diseases.

     

          Feza Remzi, MD, Chairman of Department of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic and Chairman of Cleveland Clinic Center for International Medical Education.  His specialty interests include surgical treatment of colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, ileal pouch construction and revisions and single-port laparoscopic colorectal procedures.  Dr. Remzi earned his medical degree from Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey. He completed his internship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He also completed a residency in the Department of General Surgery and a fellowship in the Department of Colorectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He is a member of a number of medical societies, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Gastroenterology Association, and the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons, among others. He has published extensive on topics such as renal cell carcinoma, ileal pouch anal anastomosis, and Crohn’s disease. Dr. Remzi has been recognized with several awards and honors, including being included in Cleveland Magazine’s “Best Doctors” in 2007 and 2008. He was the Ed and Joey Story Endowed Chair Holder in Colorectal Surgery in 2007. He was recognized as the Cleveland Clinic Department of Colorectal Surgery Teacher of the Year award in 2007 and received the Cleveland Clinic Innovator Award, also in 2007, among others.

 

        John J. Fung, MD, PhD, is the Chairman of the Department of General Surgery and HPB Surgery and Director of Transplant Center at the Cleveland Clinic and was the former Chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. With more than 25 years involvement in kidney, liver, pancreas, islet, and intestinal transplantation, he is also an accomplished immunologist. Dr. Fung received his BA from the Johns Hopkins University in 1975, and a PhD in Immunology in 1980 and MD in 1982 from the University of Chicago. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Rochester, and a transplant surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Starzl. Between 1987 and 1988, he served as Director of Histocompatibility Testing at the University of Rochester. In 1989, he joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, and he held the tenured position as the inaugural Thomas E. Starzl Professor in Surgery. He is currently Professor of Surgery at the Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western University.Dr. Fung is a member of numerous scientific and surgical societies and served as President of the International Liver Transplantation Society from 1997-1999. He has published more than 850 articles and book chapters and serves on the editorial board for several medical journals. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief for Liver Transplantation, the highest impact factor specialty transplant journal. His principal research interests are in transplantation immunology, immunosuppressive therapies, and liver related immunology. He has received funding from the NIH, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, as well as support from industry. In addition, he has received numerous prestigious lay and professional awards. Dr. Fung is active in community affairs and has been a member of the Board of Directors at the Americans for Medical Progress, the LifeBanc Organ Procurement Organization and the American Liver Foundation. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Army Reserve Medical Corps with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He lives in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, with his wife, Beth, and four children, Justin, Lauren, Brendan and Shannon.

 

 

    

         Bo Shen, MD, Professor of Medicine at Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and staff at Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of Cleveland Clinic. His specialty interests include inflammatory bowel disease, GI endoscopy and imaging technology, and pouchitis and pouch diseases. Dr. Shen earned his medical degree from Nantong Medical College in Jiangsu, China. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Nantong Medical College Hospital in China, a residency in internal medicine at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Urbana, Ill. He also completed a fellowship in the Department of Gastroenterology at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a national and international renowned expert in inflammatory bowel diseases and ileal pouch disorders. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles in the field. He is a section editor in journal of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He holds committee assignments in American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America..

 

       Lisa Yerian, MD, Assistant Professor of Pathology at the Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, Section Head of Surgical Pathology and Director of Hepatobiliary Pathology at Cleveland Clinic.  She joined the Department of Anatomic Pathology at Cleveland Clinic in 2004 after training in Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology at the University of Chicago, She shares a joint appointment in the Transplantation Center.  She is also a member of the Gastrointestinal Pathology service at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Yerian is board-certified in anatomic pathology and has many clinical interests, including the histologic diagnosis of liver and gastrointestinal diseases. Her specific research interests include fatty liver disease and the development of cancer in chronic hepatitis. Dr. Yerian has a longstanding commitment to pathology education and directs national courses in Liver Pathology and Gastrointestinal Pathology. She also participates in national education committees, including course co-director in the Annual Postgraduate Course at AASLD.

 

        Laura Nagy, PhD, Professor of Molecular Medicine, Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and Staff in Pathobiology and Gastroenterology at the Cleveland Clinic.  Dr. Nagy’s research investigates the role of innate immunity in the development of alcoholic liver disease.  Her research is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health.  Dr. Nagy received her Bachelor’s degree from Yale University and then both her M.S. and Ph.D. in Nutrition from the University of California at Berkeley. She then held a postdoctoral position in the Department of Neurology at the University of California San Francisco from 1986-1990, before being hired as a Professor at the University of Guelph (Canada). In 1996, she returned to UC San Francisco where she spent a year as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics. Dr. Nagy was named Young Investigator of the Year by the Research Society on Alcoholism (1993) and a Future Leader in Nutrition for Life Sciences International (1993).  Dr. Nagy has been a member of both extramural and intramural review panels at NIH and is on the editorial boards of Hepatology, Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, and American Journal of Physiology.

 

       Ariel E. Feldstein, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and Staff in Cell Biology and Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Feldstein is the Director of Pediatric Research at the Cleveland Clinic. He is a federally funded principal investigator with a laboratory-based program focused on molecular mechanisms of cell death and liver injury in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.  He trained with Gregory Gores at the Mayo Clinic and moved to the Cleveland Clinic in 2004. Dr. Feldstein work has been recognized by a number of awards, including American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Research Scholar Award, the Research Excellence in GI and Liver (REGAL) Award, The Cleveland Clinic Innovator Award, the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Obesity Research Award among others. Dr. Feldstein has pioneered the role of examining cytokeratin-18 fragments as markers for hepatocyte apoptosis in NASH.  He holds a patent on the use of this assay for this clinical condition. 

Morris Sherman

Associate Professor of Medicine

University of Toronto

Morris Sherman is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and has been a staff gastroenterologist at the Toronto General Hospital since 1984.

His medical career began in South Africa where he received his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in 1972. He did an internship and residency at Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg and Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. Dr. Sherman did his research training at the University of Cape Town and was granted his PhD in 1982 and then did his post-doctoral training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York from 1982 – 1984.

Throughout his medical career, Dr. Sherman has taken a particular interest in viral hepatitis and liver cancer and has been at the forefront for developing screening for hepatocellular carcinoma. He has published extensively in numerous medical books and journals and received an award for outstanding research from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Dr. Sherman has been on the National Board of Directors of the Canadian Liver Foundation for a number of years and has served as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee. As of June 2009, he was elected the Chairman of the Canadian Liver Foundation’s National Board of Directors. Dr. Sherman has also been President of the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver, a member of the National Canadian Research Training Program in Hepatitis C and Past-Chairman of the Canadian Viral Hepatitis Network.

Dr. Sherman has demonstrated his expertise and provided knowledge translation through an extensive list of publications including 37 original articles, 7 editorials, 6 practice guidelines and 17 review articles.

 

Winnie Wong

Associate Professor

Director, Gastroenterology Subspecialty Training Program

Division of Gastroenterology

University of Alberta

Dr. Winnie Wong is an Associate Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta.  She completed her medical degree and Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Manitoba.  Dr. Wong obtained her GI fellowship at the University of Toronto, Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research fellowship at the University of Alberta, and Masters in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.   

Dr. Wong is the Director of Gastroenterology Subspecialty Training Program and Director of the Department of Medicine Mentorship program at the University of Alberta.  She has served as an Examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons GI Certification Examination from 2003-2009.  She has served as the Chair of the Gender Committee for the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology, and Education Chair of the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver.  She is the current President of the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver.

She is a Hepatologist at the University of Alberta Hospital, with expertise in viral hepatitis, fatty liver, and liver transplantation.

 

Samuel Lee

Professor of Medicine (Hepatology)

University of Calgary

Dr. Lee is Professor of Medicine (Hepatology) at the University of Calgary and the Foothills Hospital, Calgary, where he joined the faculty in 1988.  He received his MD from Memorial University (1978), then did residency training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University of Toronto (1978-83).  This was followed by a research fellowship at INSERM Unit 481, Clichy, France, in hepatic hemodynamics (1984-87).  His bench research program is focused on cardiovascular abnormalities in cirrhosis, and clinical research on viral hepatitis.  Dr. Lee has published over 165 peer-reviewed papers and 13 book chapters.  He has served as President of the Canadian Association for Study of Liver, and currently sits on several international and national committees including the AASLD and AGA abstract review committees. He is the chairman of the International Ascites Club (2007-2010), and currently editor-in-chief of the journal Liver International. He has won many awards for teaching and research, and has been an invited speaker in more than 30 countries.

Eric M. Yoshida, MD, MHSc, FRCP(C), FACP, FACG, is a Professor of Medicine and the Head of the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of British Columbia. He is also the Head of Gastroenterology of the Vancouver General Hospital and the University Hospital.

Dr. Yoshida also has a cross-appointment as a Clinical  Assistant Professor  in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (i.e.: School of Pharmacy) at the University of British Columbia and is the Head of the BC Hepatitis Program which is a partnership between the BC Centre for Disease Control and the University of British Columbia. He is also the Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Program at British Columbia Transplant, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority of the Ministry of Health of British Columbia.

Nationally, Dr. Yoshida is the Past-President of the Governing Board of the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver (CASL) and has been on the CASL Executive Board since 2002. He is a member of the Canadian Liver Foundation Board of Directors and the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Canadian Liver Foundation. Dr. Yoshida is a Deputy Editor of the Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology, an Associate Editor of Annals of Hepatology and an editorial board member of several other medical journals including Liver International and China's World Journal of Gastroenterology.

His areas of academic interest and clinical research are hepatology, liver transplantation and gastroenterology.

 

Eve Roberts

Adjunct Professor of Paediatrics, Medicine and Pharmacology

University of Toronto

Dr. Roberts was educated at Bryn Mawr College and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her postgraduate training included internship/residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, training in hepatology with Dame Sheila Sherlock at the Royal Free Hospital in London, UK, and research training relating to hepatic pathophysiology and pharmacology in Toronto. She joined the staff of the Hospital for Sick Children and its Research Institute in 1984, where she has focused on paediatric hepatology. She was appointed Senior Scientist in the Research Institute in 1990 and Professor of Paediatrics, Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of Toronto in 1998.

Her clinical research interests include a broad spectrum of paediatric liver disorders. She was the principal clinician-researcher on the research team which identified the gene abnormal in Wilson disease, and she was among the first to describe non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in children and investigate its disease mechanism and possible treatment. She collaborated with Professor Bibudhendra Sarkar to develop hepatocellular metalloproteomics for studying hepatic copper disposition. She was the first recipient of the University of Toronto Department of Paediatrics Subspecialty Teaching Award, and she received the Richard Rowe Award for Clinical Excellence in Paediatric Medical Care from the University of Toronto Department of Paediatrics in 2003.  In 2008 she received the Gold Medal, co-sponsored by the Canadian Liver Foundation and the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver. She recently moved to Halifax where she is studying for a doctorate in Philosophy of Biology at Dalhousie University.
